The Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis, commonly known as AMORC, is a modern Rosicrucian organization. It presents its instruction as a path of practical and mystical study, offered through lessons and complemented by local activity.[1]
Modern organization and claimed inheritance#
AMORC's institutional history places its modern American development in 1915 under H. Spencer Lewis. The organization also describes a much older inheritance of mystery teachings, including connections with ancient Egypt. These are two different kinds of historical claim: a modern organization can be documented through its founders and publications, while an asserted ancient lineage belongs to its traditional account of itself.[2]
The name invokes the rose and cross associated with Rosicrucian literature. Seventeenth-century manifestos imagined a learned fraternity working toward religious and intellectual renewal. AMORC interprets that inheritance within a later educational structure rather than simply reproducing the social setting of the manifestos.
Study and practice#
The public account of Rosicrucian study includes attention to consciousness, perception, meditation, and the relation between human beings and the wider universe. The lessons are intended to be worked with gradually. AMORC describes this as experiential learning rather than assent to a single creed.[1]
AMORC supplies context for Hermeticism, modern initiatory movements, and the continued use of Rosicrucian symbols. It is separate from Builders of the Adytum and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, despite overlapping interests. It is also not a Satanic church. Shared vocabulary such as illumination or initiation describes only part of each group's religious outlook.
