Barbatos is the eighth spirit in the Ars Goetia. He is a duke with thirty legions, described as appearing when the sun is in Sagittarius with four kings and their companies. His offices include understanding animals, finding enchanted treasure, and reconciling friends or people in authority.[1][2]
Voices of other creatures#
The catalogue specifies birdsong and other sounds, including the barking of dogs. Barbatos's gift concerns understanding what those voices communicate. Caim receives a related office involving animal voices and the sound of water, although his appearance and rank differ.
The detail gives Barbatos a more particular profile than a general spirit of nature. It also places ordinary animal sounds inside a catalogue concerned with forms of knowledge unavailable to the operator without supernatural assistance.[2]
Treasure and retinue#
The treasure associated with Barbatos is specifically hidden through enchantment. His office is to break that concealment. Several Goetic spirits disclose treasures, but the wording about magical protection helps distinguish this entry from a simple promise of riches.[1]
The four accompanying kings form part of the ceremonial appearance. They should not be confused with the four cardinal rulers named in other sections of spirit literature unless a source explicitly identifies them. The entry also remembers Barbatos as belonging to the angelic order of Virtues, some part of which he retains.
Modern depictions often turn the name into the figure of a bearded archer. Such images belong to reception and illustration; the offices and retinue in the grimoire remain the starting point for describing its Barbatos.
