Decarabia is the sixty-ninth spirit in the Ars Goetia, a marquis with thirty legions. His first appearance is described as a star in a pentacle, after which he takes human shape. His offices concern herbs, precious stones, and the appearances of birds.[1][2]
A star instead of an animal#
The initial geometrical or celestial image is unusual among the catalogue's mounted soldiers, birds, and hybrid creatures. It belongs to the described apparition. The seal associated with the name is a separate sign and should not automatically be identified with that first star.[1]
Decarabia's knowledge of plant and stone properties resembles the offices of Morax and Stolas. The bird-related effect makes his account more particular: the text says that bird-like forms can appear before the operator, remaining, singing, and drinking like natural birds.[2]
Natural likeness#
The description uses the likeness of birds rather than offering a straightforward account of catching or breeding ordinary animals. The effect sits within the grimoire's imagined encounter, where natural-looking forms can be produced by a spirit.
The later human shape supplies a speaking figure after the star. Together, those appearances and the small group of offices give Decarabia a profile that can be followed through editions. A modern assignment of a particular bird species or fixed plant is an addition unless a named source supplies it.
