Ipos is the twenty-second spirit of the Ars Goetia. He is both an earl and a prince, commanding thirty-six legions. His appearance combines an angelic form with a lion's head, a goose's foot, and a hare's tail.[1][2]

A composite figure#

The catalogue's anatomy is deliberately mixed. The angelic form does not make the entry a description of an ordinary angel, and the animal parts do not amount to a familiar zoological creature. Each feature contributes to the recognizable hybrid portrait.

Ipos is credited with knowing past, present, and future events and making people witty and bold. The office moves from hidden knowledge to qualities displayed in speech or action. It gives the entry a social dimension beyond the disclosure of facts.[2]

Name and rank#

Alternative spellings in earlier catalogues can make this entry difficult to recognize in a quick comparison. The numbered place in the Goetia, the mixed appearance, and the seal provide firmer identifiers than the name alone.[1]

The two titles should be reported together for the edition that supplies them. A modern chart that places every spirit in exactly one rank can conceal details of its sources. Botis and Morax offer other examples of paired titles, although their offices and appearances differ. Such comparisons show the catalogue's variety without assuming that every apparent inconsistency can be resolved into one perfect hierarchy.
