Marbas is the fifth spirit of the Ars Goetia. He is described as a president with thirty-six legions, appearing first as a lion and then in human shape. The catalogue credits him with revealing hidden matters, knowledge of mechanical arts, and changing human forms.[1]
The lion and the artificer#
The initial lion supplies a memorable image, while the offices concern practical knowledge as well as transformation. Mechanical arts in this setting include skilled making and technical work. The phrase belongs to an older arrangement of knowledge in which craft and natural philosophy could appear beside ceremonial claims.[2]
Vapula is another Goetic spirit whose description combines a lion-like form with instruction in crafts. The resemblance creates a useful comparison between entries; their ranks, legion totals, and complete descriptions remain different.
Illness in the source#
Marbas is also said to cause and cure disease. This paired power is part of the spirit's literary office. It does not establish an effective treatment, and an account of historical magic should keep that claim in its original setting.[1][2]
The human form allows Marbas to answer questions within the catalogue's imagined encounter. His seal identifies him within the larger ceremonial system, where signs, names, and ranked offices are used together. An illustration of a lion and a reproduction of the seal convey different parts of that description.
Variants of the name occur in earlier demonological catalogues. The Goetic entry provides the numbered position used by many modern reference lists, while Pseudomonarchia Daemonum offers an earlier witness for comparison.
