Valac, also written Volac or Valak, is the sixty-second spirit in the Ars Goetia. He is a president with thirty legions, appearing as a boy with angel's wings riding a two-headed dragon. His offices concern hidden treasure and the locations of serpents.[1][2]

A child on a dragon#

The boy and dragon are separate figures in the described appearance: one rides the other. The two heads belong to the dragon. Keeping this arrangement clear prevents a modern image from being mistaken for a faithful reproduction when it places the heads or wings elsewhere.

The catalogue says that Valac reveals serpents and brings them to the operator. The entry's imagery and office therefore both involve serpentine creatures, although the ridden dragon is not identified as one of the ordinary serpents being disclosed.[2]

Historical figure and later fiction#

The name Valak is also used in contemporary horror fiction. A fictional portrayal can supply a costume, motives, and biography that do not appear in the early grimoire. The historical entry is the winged boy, dragon, rank, and stated offices, not every screen character bearing the name.

Peterson's notes compare the spelling with earlier catalogues. The associated seal offers a further identifier when names vary across editions. Treasure-finding connects Valac with several neighboring entries, but his specific appearance makes him readily distinguishable from their royal riders, birds, or human speakers.[1]
