Vepar is the forty-second spirit in the Ars Goetia, a duke commanding twenty-nine legions. The catalogue describes a mermaid and assigns the spirit an office involving the waters and ships carrying arms or military equipment.[1][2]
A maritime office#
Vepar can make the sea rough and cause it to appear crowded with ships. The description joins the control of water to the perception of vessels upon it. Its military cargo also gives the entry a setting more specific than a general command over the ocean.[2]
Another stated office concerns infected wounds and death within a short period. The grimoire treats these effects as magical claims. They should be studied as part of the text's representation of injury rather than as an explanation of disease.
Mermaid and sea demon#
The mermaid form differentiates Vepar from the winged human figure of Focalor. Forneus offers a third maritime image, a great sea monster, but his offices primarily concern rhetoric and reputation. Similar aquatic appearances do not always accompany similar functions.
Earlier catalogues supply alternative spellings, including Separ. The Goetic seal and numbered position help identify the entry through those variants. A modern image may emphasize the mermaid's beauty, while the historical description itself leaves most of the body's details unstated and gives greater attention to ships, storms, and wounds.[1]
