Alloces, also written Alocer or Allocer, is the fifty-second spirit in the Ars Goetia. He is a duke with thirty-six legions, appearing as a soldier riding a large horse. The face resembles a lion and is described as red, with fiery eyes.[1][2]

Astronomy and familiars#

Alloces teaches astronomy and the liberal sciences and provides good familiars. The learned office contrasts with the warrior's dress. The text gives him a loud, hoarse voice, completing a portrait whose sensory details are more specific than a simple designation as a teaching spirit.[2]

Sabnock is another mounted soldier with a lion's head, but concerns fortifications and wounds. Alloces's educational office makes the difference between them clear. A shared visual type is insufficient to combine their entries.

Following the name#

Earlier catalogues and translations use spellings such as Alocer. The Goetic position, horse, lion-like face, and teaching office allow the figure to be followed across those forms. Peterson's notes identify the relevant earlier witnesses.[1]

The seal supplies the sign paired with this description. A later portrait can elaborate the soldier's armor or the horse, but the grimoire itself provides no complete costume design. Its most distinctive elements are the mounted figure, red lion face, fiery eyes, voice, and instruction in the heavens and learned arts.
