Sabnock is the forty-third spirit of the Ars Goetia, a marquis with fifty legions. He appears as an armed soldier with a lion's head riding a pale horse. Sabnach, Sabnac, and related forms occur in the earlier transmission.[1][2]
Fortification and equipment#
The catalogue gives Sabnock the building of towers, castles, and cities and the furnishing of them with armor or weapons. This office resembles Halphas's military construction, but Sabnock receives a more overtly soldier-like appearance.[2]
His other office concerns prolonged wounds and sores. The text also says that he supplies good familiars. The entry combines military infrastructure, bodily injury, and spirit service within one ranked portrait.
A lion-headed rider#
The lion head makes Sabnock readily distinguishable from Eligos's knight, despite their shared martial dress. A pale horse appears in several Goetic descriptions, including Bathin's, so the mount alone is a poor identifier.
The alternate name Salmac in earlier witnesses is recorded in Peterson's notes. Following those names alongside the office and seal gives a more careful account of transmission than constructing a separate biography for every spelling.[1]
The figure's military role also shows the range of the Goetia's concerns. Its catalogue includes walls and weapons beside rhetoric, herbs, astrology, and treasure. Sabnock belongs to the practical aims imagined for an operator within that mixture.
