Ose is the fifty-seventh spirit of the Ars Goetia, a president with three legions in the 1904 edition. He appears first as a leopard and then as a man. The catalogue assigns him learning in the liberal sciences and answers about divine or secret matters.[1][2]

Transformation and belief#

Ose's more unusual office concerns changing a person's form together with the person's understanding of that change. The transformed person is said to believe that they are the creature or thing they have become. The entry thus describes perception and identity, not only a different outward shape.[2]

This feature distinguishes Ose from Marbas's brief promise of altered forms or Andrealphus's bird transformation. It is also different from a modern psychological diagnosis. The grimoire presents a magical effect, and should be read as evidence for that idea rather than as an explanation of a real person's mental state.

Leopard and human speaker#

The two appearances give the entry the familiar progression from animal apparition to human conversation. Oso, Voso, and other spellings occur in its transmission, with the numbered position and office helping identify the figure.[1]

The seal is the sign paired with the name. A contemporary portrayal may build a fuller personality around the leopard image, but the early account concentrates on knowledge and the striking claim about transformed self-understanding.
