Eligos, also called Eligor, is the fifteenth spirit of the Ars Goetia. The catalogue ranks him as a duke ruling sixty legions. He appears as a knight with a lance, an ensign, and a serpent, a combination that makes the entry's military setting immediately visible.[1][2]
Warfare and patronage#
Eligos is said to know hidden things and future events, especially wars and how soldiers will meet. The office concerns knowledge about an encounter as well as the encounter itself. It resembles an idealized source of military intelligence within the grimoire's account.[2]
He also procures the favor of lords and powerful people. In the catalogue's world, military knowledge and social patronage are closely connected concerns. The knight's equipment and his office give the portrait a recognizable relationship to rank and command.
Comparison with other entries#
Leraje concerns battle and arrow wounds, while Sabnock concerns fortifications and equipment. Eligos's entry emphasizes foreknowledge and influential relationships. These offices overlap without making the three descriptions interchangeable.
The variation between Eligos and Eligor is visible in editions and earlier catalogues. A seal reproduced under one spelling should be linked to the source that uses it. The lance, ensign, and serpent provide the stated appearance; elaborate horse colors or modern attributes require additional evidence rather than being read back into this entry.[1]
