Amon is the seventh spirit in the Ars Goetia, a marquis commanding forty legions. The text describes a wolf with a serpent's tail and flames issuing from its mouth. In human form, the creature retains unusual features associated with a raven and dog's teeth.[1][2]
Discord and reconciliation#
Amon is credited with knowledge of past and future events. His social office is two-sided: he can bring about feuds and reconcile disputes between friends. The pairing belongs to the original entry, so a summary limited to reconciliation leaves out part of the description.[2]
The catalogue's language treats quarrels as something the operator might alter through a named spirit. Other entries, including Botis and Ronove, also concern relationships, favor, or agreement. Amon's distinctive place comes from his combination of those offices with the fiery wolf form.
The name in different settings#
The Goetic Amon should be identified by his text and catalogue number. Similar spelling alone cannot establish that he is identical with the Egyptian god Amun. The grimoire entry supplies a demonological portrait, not a history of an ancient Egyptian cult.
The seal accompanying Amon's name is another identifying feature. Comparing it with manuscript versions of the description helps distinguish a historical textual witness from a later artistic reconstruction. The raven-like human head is described differently across witnesses, and Peterson's edition records such variations.[1]
